Vernacular Architecture, Solution to environmental issues

Where do you live? Now, think about what building styles are considered old in your area and have been replaced by concrete building styles. Those old buildings are the vernacular architecture style.

Vernacular architecture is a design trend that follows traditional styles using local materials, addressing contextual habitation needs. Vernacular architecture focuses more on functional factors, climatic adaptation, and human comfort.

Observe the images above. Which set of buildings looks more interesting? And which looks boring? Modern-day construction depends on international trends and global product supply. While vernacular architecture was developed from area-specific necessity and knowledge. This is why following the global style makes the buildings look so boring and lifeless, whereas the buildings designed with a local touch look colorful and adventurous.

Vernacular Architecture is developed considering microclimatic issues. So, the built form ensures human comfort. This means less use of mechanical solutions and less carbon production. As these buildings are built with local materials, they stay strong for years after years with little maintenance and create almost zero industrial waste because they get dissolved with nature easily. Thus, creating less negative impact on nature.

The vernacular architecture was developed by local builders who have no degree in architecture whatsoever; some people even build their own houses with locally available materials. But nowadays, with so much negative impact on the environment, the topic is being given importance in the professional learning and architecture research areas.

We, Archinfinitiers, believe that the places we are born in are sufficient for the things we need to live. Materials and knowledge provided to us in the specific geographical area we are born in are to fulfill our needs. And those materials are the safest and most sustainable to use in that specific area.

Does that mean we should only consider traditional building styles? No, of course, we cannot follow the vernacular approach everywhere. But there are so many sectors in small towns and countryside and even in large cities where the vernacular approach could bring better solutions for the existing problems, and modern world construction systems could create more problems. So we, as architects, should be open to every possible opportunity to be kind to nature.
