Relation Between Art & Architecture

Table of Contents

Art and architecture have had a close relationship from the very first history. Both share a blurred and faded separation line between them. Architecture is recognized as the most sophisticated form of art. That means architecture itself is a part of art. Both share the same principle and organization of aesthetics.

Art and architecture are complete with each other. These both have much common ground that makes the relation between art and architecture part of each other. Stay until the last of the post to understand more about the relation between these two.

What is Art?

First, we want to identify what we mean by the term “Art” because it is crucial. Cause painting, sculpting, singing, dancing, architecture, and writing all are included in the term “Art”. these all creative fields are art forms. And all art forms are interdependent and inspire each other. In this post, we mean Painting by the term art.

Art is the way of visual creative expression. It contains the artist’s idea and imagination in the form of abstraction and figurative. It concerns more about the beauty and aesthetic aspects rather than its practicality. So, the imagination of the artist in the case of art is boundless. Artists can imagine whatever they want regardless of the consternation of construction and practicality.

What is Architecture?

On the other hand, architecture is also a way of creative expression but it feels like a built environment. It is three-dimensional. It is both a visual and sensible expression. Another major difference between art and architecture is practicality or buildability. An architect has also the freedom of imagination but end of the day he has to think about the construction and buildability of his imagination. In art, a viewer views the art from the outside but in architecture the viewer enters it and experiences it rather than just view it, which makes it a more interactive form of art.

How is Art related to Architecture?

All art forms are interdependent and inspire each other as we said before. Thus art also plays a vital role in architecture. It helps architects to generate concepts,  and ideas. The architecture feels with both the physical and physiology of humans. The constructed element helps architecture to communicate with physical entities and art allows it to communicate with psychological entities.

Art is the core principle behind good architecture. Architects can make architecture of beautiful and harmonious environment through art. Artistic value is one of the criteria for defining good architecture. Most of the time architecture attracts and surprises people by its artistic quality.

We all know that all art forms are heavily influenced by society. Most of the time these art forms play the role of bridge for each other between the society and them. If we consider the social impact on architecture. We can find logic from the analysis of art (painting) we will see the social changes innovation, and thinking processes first reflected in art and then gradually adopted to the architecture field.

Art can be incorporated into architecture in two ways. One is by adding artistic elements later. That means after completing the project the artistic elements are placed in sweet places or careful additions of artistic features in spaces or architectural elements. A wall can be used for hanging paintings or a void space can be used for putting a sculpture there.

Another way is an integrated approach. Where overall architecture becomes an art. The building form stands as a sculpture. The functions and spaces are carefully crafted from it. Obviously, for this type of integration, we need to think from the early stage of the design process.

Art and architecture are connected very deeply. You can’t think of architecture without art. Art is the very basic and primary unit of architecture. You can discuss it like that this primary unit updated and developed into architecture later on. So, to decode an architecture properly and explain it you need to understand the artistic sight of this architecture. If you want to make your architecture upper-level and make it more interactive you need to work with its primary unit and that is art.
