How Architecture impact human behavior?

Do you ever observe that your behavior varies in different spaces? When you go to a hospital or museum, you probably do not make as much noise as you do in a park or shopping mall. Or your behavior does not remain the same for the office and restaurant. Have you ever thought about this? Have you ever asked yourself why you behave differently in different spaces?

It seems like there is an invisible chain and energy that controls our behavior. Architectural design is one of those energies and plays an important role. It has been proven that architecture can impact human behavior.

“We create our buildings and then they create us.” –   Frank Lloyd Wright

This quote from the famous architect Frank Lloyd Wright demonstrates the impact of architecture on human behavior. Architectural design insists and inspires us to behave according to the environment of the space. On the other hand, different architectural features of a space define the suitable type of human behavior. Humans are influenced by everything around them. Most of the learning they get is from the experiences of their lives. Most of the time, we experience architecture around us; moreover, the main purpose of architecture is to provide people with an experience. This experience creates realizations in the human mind and influences them to act according to the environment of the space. That’s how architecture impacts human behavior.

As an architecture student, you have to study psychology in your school. Only to understand humans more deeply because psychology is the field that talks about human behavior, how they interact with their surroundings, how they interact with space, and so on. You also study logic and philosophy, which also help you understand humans. These studies help you bridge the connection between your design and humans. This ability of architects helps to create impactful architecture for the human mind. It helps to play with human psychology.

Many architectural features like scale, thermal comfort, color, natural light, acoustic, airflow, greenery, odor, etc., directly impact human behavior. Because these features greatly impact the experience of humans throughout a space.
